About the City Festival

The City Festival is an urban culture festival covering a wide array of interests and activities.  It’s not just about the performing and visual arts; each year the festival includes cultural exchange projects, heritage and living history programmes, workshops about urban studies and design, and much more.

With such a broad range of programmes, the City Festival aims not only to enthuse, entertain and stimulate our audiences, but also to present new perspectives and challenging ideas.  One of the missions of the City Festival is to establish contacts and channels for local artists to tour and promote their works outside Hong Kong.  Since its launch in 1999, the City Festival has succeeded in building a network with many cities around the region, including Adelaide, Melbourne, Kaohsiung, Taipei, Seoul, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Bangkok and Singapore.  It will continue to seek new opportunities for new productions and touring, both in Hong Kong and abroad.

The Fringe Club aims to provide an inclusive environment for artists to create and show their work, including all forms of theatre, dance, music and visual arts, by offering rent-free use of exhibition and performance facilities, plus admin, publicity and technical support in Hong Kong and overseas.

The City Festival challenges the conventional way of staging a festival. Over the past few months, we’ve asked ourselves some simple but hard questions. Is it still relevant to do things in the way passed down to us? New technology allows us to roam free as never before. It has given us easy access, convenience, control over where, when and how we choose to enjoy the arts. We have come up with a new idea for The City Festival - Festival Without Walls. A festival that can take the arts beyond their city boundary, take sufficient time to explore ideas, and build relationships.
